Annotation | Physical restraints are commonly used on older people living in geriatric care settings. This cross-sectional Swedish study investigated the influence of environmental and organisational variations and resident and staff characteristics on restraint prevalence. The study included 540 residents (mean age 82) and 529 staff members from 33 nursing home wards (in 10 nursing homes) and 12 group living units for people with dementia. The proportion of residents with impaired mobility function, the number of behavioural disturbances, and nursing staff's attitudes towards use of restraint were the strongest discriminators between restraint-free wards and wards that used restraints.
