Annotation | Increased use of preventive services for older people has been associated with improved health status and decreased medical costs. The authors sought to examine the use of the Health Risk Appraisal (HRA) in benchmarking compliance and characterising those retired employees who met preventive service guidelines. This study focused on 59,670 American retired employees of General Motors (GM) aged 65+ as of January 1996. Self-reported HRA data indicated that this population participated at a higher level than a comparable national sample exceeding goals set by Healthy People 2000. Higher compliance was associated with being male, younger than 70, multiple-year HRA participation, overall low risk status and health maintenance organization (HMO) insurance plan selection. (RH). |
