Daytime sleepiness is associated with 3-year incident dementia and cognitive decline in older Japanese-American men | Author(s) | Daniel Foley, Andrew Monjan, Kamal Masaki |

Annotation | As part of the Honolulu-Asia Aging Study of dementia, 2,346 Japanese-American men aged 71-93 who screened negative for prevalent dementia at baseline were also screened again in a 3-year follow-up. Those who reported excessive sleepiness at baseline (8%) were twice as likely to be diagnosed with incident dementia than those not reporting daytime sleepiness. In contrast, insomnia was not associated with cognitive decline or incidence of dementia. Thus daytime sleepiness in older people may be an early indicator of decline in cognitive functioning and onset of dementia. (RH). |
