AnnotationThe General Household Survey presents statistical trends based on a sample of the population of Great Britain, being a continuous, multi-purpose survey covering topics such as household and family trends, personal finances, housing, employment, health, sport and leisure activities. With the 1994 survey (24th edition) the main title changed to "Living in Britain", although it is still the GHS series. It has been a continuous annual survey since 1971. Since 1988, the Survey began reporting on a financial year basis. However, the GHS fieldwork was suspended for 1997/98 and 1999/2000 pending a review, and there will be no reports for these years. The 27th edition (April 2000) marks the launch of a redesigned survey, consisting of two elements: the Continuous Survey and Trailers. The Continuous Survey will remain unchanged for five years, (to March 2005), apart from essential changes e.g. benefit rates. Questions specifically designed to cover aspects of the lives of older people (65 years+) have been included in the survey in 1980, 1985, 1991, 1994 and 1998. The module of questions asks about their living circumstances, health, ability to perform a range of domestic and other tasks, and the use of health and social services. This title has been subject to a five-year review and it was decided that the last Living in Britain title is the 2002 edition, no 31 published in 2004. All the statistical information found in this title will now be included in other ONS publications as the GHS will be freely available online. (KJ/RH).
