AnnotationThis report was commissioned to explore evidence on informal care for older people, and to assess the evidence on substitution between informal care in Scotland and the rest of the UK. Among the sources used to provide economic and descriptive analyses were the Family Resources Survey (FRS), the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) and the Scottish Household Survey (SHS). Given that provision in the informal care sector substantially exceeds that in the formal sector, a significant switch from informal to formal provision would significantly increase formal sector costs.
