Annotation | The six research studies commissioned for this volume reflect broad public support for the provision of free personal care for older people. The research also highlights the extremely important role of informal carers in Scotland. The studies comprise: a public attitudes telephone survey; two focus group studies; a questionnaire survey of independent home care providers; and two studies of secondary analysis of data on disability and informal care. Taken together, the studies indicate that the issue of free personal care is complex and multi-faceted. While public attitudes demonstrated that personal care should be provided free of charge, the longer term impact of any change in policy on factors such as private purchase of home care is difficult to predict.
