AnnotationThe Chinese version OARS Multidimensional Functional Assessment Questionnaire (MFAQ) was used to interview 557 community and 329 institutionalised older Taiwanese in a cross-sectional nationwide survey in 1991. In measurement, a 6-point rating scale was generated based on variations in type and severity of chronic illness, frequency of medical service use, physical activity capacity, and need for continuous care. In terms of physical health status ratings, some 60% of those living in the community were assessed as excellent or good in physical functioning or slightly impaired, whereas more than 50% of institutionalised residents were rated moderately physically impaired or worse.
