AnnotationIndustrialised nations have experienced many demographic changes during the last decades of the 20th century. Among the most important are the effects of "population ageing", because since 1900, the average length of life has almost doubled, while birth rates have fallen. The authors examine five issues related to these trends for families and intergenerational relationships in the 21st century. The first concerns the consequences of population ageing for family structures and relationships, with the emergence of the "beanpole" family structure and the longer years of "linked lives" across population. The other four are: the "decline of the family" debate; intergenerational solidarity over time; intergenerational conflict in ageing families; and prospects for solidarity and conflict between generations in the 21st century.
