AnnotationAn American qualitative study of 24 activists (aged 66-91) serving in organisations such as the Gray Panthers and the Older Women's League showed that these activists practised a high degree of self-care in several areas. These included: activism to secure resources on behalf of themselves, their peer groups, and generations coming after them; co-operative housing efforts to maintain independence; personal health strategies; and economic and other preparations for long-term care. Factors affecting the degree of self-care were uncertainty about the occurrence and timing of future health-related crises and lifelong independence. The participants were highly engaged in this study, each reviewing and validating his or her interview transcript and summary of themes. (RH).
