The future of pensions and retirement in Europe towards productive ageing | Author(s) | Alan Walker |
Journal title | Hallym International Journal of Aging, vol 1, no 2, 1999 |
Pages | pp 3-15 |
Keywords | Pensions ; Retirement ; Health [elderly] ; Labour economics ; Social policy ; European Union ; Europe. |
Annotation | This article focuses on four key issues with regard to the European Union (EU): pensions reform; the implications of pensions reform for intergenerational solidarity; the future of retirement; and the link between economic activity and health. If ageing populations are unhealthy, not only will this be costly in personal, family and societal terms but, in addition, it closes down policy options which have the potential to offset the financial impact of ageing, such as extended employment. Therefore it is important, in policy terms, to discuss pensions, retirement and health together, and not to repeat the common tendency to separate the social security and health questions. (RH). |
