Annotation | Traditional family care for older people has been declining in Korea, the result of industrialisation and urbanisation accompanied by rapid economic growth. As the population continues to age, this trend will accelerate. The role of public social services should be expanded, with more responsibility placed on government to supplement and strengthen family care. It is also important that long-term care policy and programmes for older people promote and emphasise family caregiving. How family and public responsibility for the care of older people may be blended together as complements rather than substitution becomes an important consideration, whilst also ensuring the preservation of the family. The adaptation is also required in the family care system, by changing family structures and traditional values and attitudes. (RH). |
