AnnotationAs a society made up predominantly of the Chinese race, it is only natural for people in the newly created Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the Republic of China to practise filial piety in their way of caring for elders. The rapid economic and social development which Hong Kong has achieved in recent years nevertheless suggested that the tradition of respecting the old could hardly remain the same as in the past. Based on a study of 300 respondents aged 15-29 and 60+ on their perceptions of old age, this article examines the changing role and status of older people in Hong Kong and the meaning of filial piety among the Chinese.
