Annotation | Feminist approaches are not only appropriate for studying women, but can also offer one of the best frameworks for understanding the diverse ageing experiences of all groups. The author demonstrates this point with a brief overview of feminist theoretical premises, showing how they sensitise as to gender relations as well as other systems of privilege and oppression. To illustrate how feminist perspectives allow us to go beyond partial or exclusionary concepts, the author applies these assumptions to selected areas of interest to researchers on ageing: aspects of retirement; the family in later life; and ageism. These show how a feminist focus on diversity and power relations gives us a broader knowledge of social reality that results in more inclusive, useful concepts and a more complete understanding of the ageing experiences of all.
