AnnotationThe industrialised nations are experiencing dramatic population ageing, with sharp increases in the numbers and proportions of older people. Consequently, they face many challenges in striving to maintain the policies they have developed to assist older people and their families. This article analyses contemporary challenges in public policies on ageing in the US: the provision of retirement income through Social Security; and reform options for Medicare, a national health insurance scheme for those aged 65+. It assesses the political context within which the future of these programmes will be determined. (RH).
