AnnotationBoth the number and proportion of older people in minority ethnic communities is increasing, such that the number of minority ethnic carers of older people is also set to rise. Hitherto, the needs of these groups in Scotland have not been identified, and have therefore not been accommodated in the planning and provision of health and social services. This report begins with a literature review, and defines the project's scope and research process. The Edinburgh Elderly Chinese Support Association (ECESA) and MILAN (Senior Welfare Council) which works with the Bangladeshi, Indian, Mauritian and Pakistani communities were invited to participate. The findings are presented as follows: characteristics of carers in the sample and of those cared for; social work and community services; knowledge and use of health services; and other essential forms of support. The report makes recommendations to the four Social Work Departments in Edinburgh and the Lothians, Lothian Health, and organisations in the voluntary sector to build on their race equalities strategies, and to work collaboratively.
