AnnotationMany older people wish to remain in their own homes, but are faced with a slow deterioration in their abilities. Most of the time, they are fit enough to retain their independence, but sometimes need help for some tasks. The use of assistive technology may make the difference between retaining their independence and quality of life, and losing their homes and independence. This editorial prefaces F G Miskall's article, "Assistive technology in elderly care" in this issue of Age and Ageing, by reviewing other recent sources of information. (RH).
