AnnotationNot only the objective characteristics of the person with dementia, but also the caregiver's situation and subjective experience need to be taken into account in understanding the actual nursing home placement. This Belgian study of partners, children and children-in-law caring for a relative with dementia (n=144) hypothesised that a poor quality of relationship, besides other determinants, will be predictive of institutionalisation. The family caregiver's preference for institutionalisation showed a strong relationship with actual nursing home placement of the patient 6-9 months later. Beside focusing on the burden of the family caregiver, more attention should be given in research to the quality of the caregiving relationship in terms of warmth or criticism. (RH).
