AnnotationA community-based sample of 19 healthy men (mean age 73.4) from Lyon, France completed ten physical activity (PA) questionnaires, the scores of which were compared with two validation measures: doubly labelled water (DLW) and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max). With the DLW method, three parameters were calculated: total energy expenditure (TEE), physical activity level (PAL), and energy expenditure of PA. Only a few of the questionnaires demonstrated a reasonable degree of reliability and could be used to rank healthy older men according to PA. Correlation coefficients were best when the Stanford Usual Activity Questionnaire was compared with all the validation measures. The two questionnaires reporting recent PA, the Seven Day Recall, and the Yale Physical Activity Survey (YPAS) accurately assessed energy expenditure for the group. The individual variability was high for all the questionnaires, suggesting their use as a proxy measure of individual energy expenditure may be limited. (RH).
