AnnotationThe role of families in helping new residents make an optimal transition from home to institutional life has been rather neglected. In that cognitively impaired (CI) residents who demonstrate situation-appropriate responses are more likely to participate in therapeutic, social, recreational and treatment programmes in nursing homes, the knowledge of those factors that complicate family caregivers' adaptation and decrease the likelihood of their involvement in nursing home care is critical. This paper aims to summarise findings from 1990s studies of post-institutionalisation of family caregiving involvement, and to generate recommendations for future studies on this topic. (RH).
