AnnotationA cross-cultural study has been examining the impact of migration of family members on sources of help and support to older members of Gujarati, Punjabi and Sylheti families living in the UK, India and Bangladesh. This paper focuses on the project's initial stages, that is, sample selection in each of the countries. Comparable samples of people aged 55 and over were drawn in the UK (n=300) and Asia (n=300): 100 each of Sylhetis, Gujaratis and Indian Punjabis. The UK sample was drawn from Gujarati, Punjabi and Sylheti elders in Birmingham, via contacts established through local ethnic associations and the use of a "snowball" technique. In Asia, the sample was drawn from villages identified as primary sources of migration to the UK. The paper discusses the principal investigators' entry points to the communities through village leaders, and the problems that have been encountered during this phase of the study. (RH).
