AnnotationSeveral theories have suggested that age-related declines in cognitive processing are due to a pervasive unitary mechanism, such as a decline in processing speed. Structural equation model (SEM) tests have shown some support for such common factor explanations. In this article, the four data sets analysed showed evidence of meaningful, non-shared age effects across component cognitive, sensory, and physiological factors. (RH).
