The reciprocal effects of leisure time activities and intellectual functioning in older people — a longitudinal analysis | Author(s) | Carmi Schooler, Mesfin Samuel Mulatu |
Journal title | Psychology and Aging, vol 16, no 3, September 2001 |
Pages | pp 466-482 |
Keywords | Recreation ; Cognitive processes ; Longitudinal surveys ; United States of America. |
Annotation | The US National Opinion Research Center (NORC) carried out surveys in 1974 and 1994/5 of a group of nationally representative employed men first interviewed in 1963. The authors use the survey to provide evidence that complex leisure time activities increase intellectual functioning for workers and non-workers; and that even in old age, carrying out complex tasks has a positive effect on intellectual processes.
