AnnotationThe "gender lens" approach to old age draws on a feminist framework that requires us to explore old age and its intersections with gender, race and ethnicity, class, and sexual orientation. Thus, this book is not about old age as a "women's issue", rather it is about how men's and women's experiences of old age are shaped in relation to one another. It explores gender and the study of old age, the body as a critical marker in old age, and sex and sexuality. It attempts to further our understanding about our experiences of work and retirement, including social inequality and retirement income. A discussion of unpaid labour leads on to consideration of unpaid informal care and family relationships. The ageism and neglect of age relations underlying both gerontological and feminist approaches are examined. The authors speculate on ways in which a consideration of old women and age relations might change feminist theories themselves. (RH).
