History and historical sociology divergent paths in the study of ageing | Author(s) | Chris Phillipson |
Journal title | Ageing and Society, vol 21, part 4, July 2001 |
Pages | pp 507-522 |
Keywords | Ageing process ; Sociology, Social Science ; Histories ; Literature reviews. |
Annotation | Two books on history in gerontology are reviewed in the context of other works: "Old age in English history: past experience, present issues", by Pat Thane (Oxford University Press, 2000); and "The politics of retirement in Britain, 1878-1948", by John Macnicol (Cambridge University Press, 1998). Themes examined are retirement contracts and the Poor Law, pension politics, and the politics of ageism. The reviewer suggests that while both books confirm the value and importance of historical and policy analysis, there is a case for developing a more explicit historical sociology of later life.
