AnnotationAn examination of recent research suggests that the state of German gerontology at the beginning of the 21st century is extremely healthy. This article draws mainly on sources published in the German language between 1997 and 2000, to provide an overview of the historical development of, and trends in, research on social and behavioural aspects of ageing in Germany. As a rapidly developing area of research, gerontology in Germany has a number of strengths, not least its very strong empirical base. Weaknesses identified include the need for closer links with other European researchers. (RH).
