Annotation | The Employment and Race Directives agreed at the end of 2001 require European Union (EU) member states to introduce legislation to outlaw unfair discrimination on the grounds of race, sexual orientation, religion or belief, disability and age in the fields of employment and training. The following issues for consultation are discussed: direct and indirect discrimination; harassment; promoting equal treatment; advice, guidance and support; occupational requirements; and positive action. Although views are also sought concerning age discrimination, the UK and other EU member states have argued for a longer period (until 2006) in which to implement the age provisions of the Employment Directive. Responses from this consultation will be used to develop more detailed proposals on age discrimination legislation for consultation in 2002. (RH). |
