Annotation | Outbreaks of infection in nursing homes are difficult to identify, and often challenging to contain. The authors report on an initial telephone survey of all 23 nursing homes in the Forth Valley Health Board area in February 2000, which was followed by a training programme and a repeat of the survey in December 2000. Staff retention and training were highlighted as problems to be resolved. The establishment of the National Care Commission (NCC) in Scotland in 2002 offers the potential to improve infection control standards, training, quality control and audit for vulnerable adults in nursing and care homes.
