AnnotationThe experiences of staff caring for residents during the later stages of life in five local authority residential homes are explored. This thesis is in three parts. Part 1 is a critical review of the relevant literature on death and dying. Part 2 presents the findings of qualitative research based on analysis of interviews with 20 staff with regard to: attitudes to ageing; religious beliefs of staff; feelings of attachment to residents; feelings as a result of past losses in their own lives; feelings when a resident approached the last stages of life; and how the experiences of staff might be understood through their actions when caring for people near the end of life. Part 3 discusses some of the tensions and dilemmas emerging from the study, especially as they relate to care practice with older people who are dying. (RH).
