Annotation123 older Japanese men and women (mean age 74.3) were assessed for functional fitness and life satisfaction from the perspective of quality of life (QOL), by means of a 21-item questionnaire covering 8 structural factors pertaining to feelings of life satisfaction. The functional fitness test consisted of 9 items representing the following 5 areas of fitness: muscular strength, agility, co-ordination, balance, and flexibility. There was no overall correlation between total fitness and total life satisfaction scores, but some of the life satisfaction factors were significantly related to some functional fitness items. These results suggest that it is important for older people to maintain their functional fitness to achieve a high quality of life. (RH).
