Annotation | Including subscribers' dependants, Laing & Buisson's survey results show an estimated 6,877,000 people covered by private medical insurance (PMI) at the end of 2000, 11.5% of the UK population. This market survey examines present and future demand for PMI, its regulation, other types of health insurance products, and information on the sector's major providers. The highest levels of PMI cover are among middle aged professionals, employers and managers; coverage for these groups falls sharply at retirement age as they drop out of company paid schemes. For the most recent information on PMI penetration by age, the reader is referred to the General Household Survey (GHS) 1987 (Table 4.11) and 1995 (Table 8.4), and the Department of Social Security's (DSS) Family Resources Survey (FRS) 1998/99.
