Annotation | Interviews were conducted with the significant others of 1,441 residents from nursing homes in the Maryland Long-Term Care Project (LTCP). The study explored factors related to the level of contact (number of visits and calls) between newly admitted nursing home residents and their family and friends. Contact decreased by about a half following admission, compared to reported pre-admission contact. Rates of contact are positively related to non-use of Medicaid, kinship closeness, support network proximity, non-demented status, and being White. The study identifies factors that are useful to consider when designing interventions to increase family involvement with nursing home residents. (RH). |
