AnnotationA survey instrument was developed listing 20 types of ageism, and tested on 84 people aged 60+. The survey's aim was to answer three questions. First, what is the prevalence of ageing in various societies? Second, which types of ageism are more prevalent? Third, which sub-groups of older people report more ageism? The survey instrument found that respondents' experience of ageism was widespread and frequent. Most reported several incidents of ageism, of which more than half were reported to have occurred "more than once". The most frequent types were people showing disrespect for older people, followed by people showing assumptions about ailments or frailty caused by age. Consequently, the author trusts that the Ageism Survey may be useful in attempts to reduce ageism. (RH).
