Annotation | In Korea, culture places a high emphasis on filial piety and co-residence of ageing parents with their adult children. In this project, 93 Korean co-residing female dyads (mothers and their daughters or daughters-in-law) completed instruments assessing provision and receipt of support (help with chores, financial assistance, advice, and affection) and relationship satisfaction. Contrary to the general image of passive older people, results showed that elders were actively involved in both providing and receiving support. For daughters or daughters-in-law, relationship satisfaction was significantly enhanced by receiving help with chores and affection. For their mothers, both providing and receiving affection were found to be significant factors for enhanced relationship satisfaction, as well as receiving help with chores. However, when mothers provided help with chores or advice, their relationship satisfaction decreased. Results are interpreted in the context of Korean culture and values. (RH). |
