AnnotationThe purpose of this paper was to investigate the net effects of cultural values and norms (filial piety) on caregiver burden in first generation South Asian families in America. A telephone questionnaire was conducted in the Dallas and Fort Worth area of Texas with primary caregivers from 118 South Asian households with an older person. Results suggest that the amount of caregiving tasks, role conflict, and role overload experienced by caregivers have significant influences on their feeling of burden. The cultural context of providing care remains significant, even though the strength of cultural influence on caregiver burden was not as strong as expected. Identification with Asian cultural norms and size of support network tend to reduce the level of caregiver burden. As caregiving tasks, role conflict and role overload increased, so the amount of caregiver burden increased. The implications for intervention and policy are discussed. (RH).
