AnnotationThe context for this review are policy pronouncements on health and social care policy in the late 1990s, and the commissioning by the Department of Health (DoH) of the Centre for Policy on Ageing (CPA) to develop national standards for residential and nursing homes. The authors investigate the association between work satisfaction and stress of care staff, and the quality of care and well-being of older people in continuing care settings. The first section explores the links between all four variables, and highlights shortcomings. The second examines the influence of intervening factors on all four variables. The paper concludes by presenting a hypothetical model grounded in the literature which summarises expected relationships between work satisfaction, work stress, quality of care, resident or patient well-being, and other related variables.
