Annotation | This study provides previously unavailable information concerning dementia as it affects a community of older California Hispanics. Despite long years of US residence, the 100 age 55+ subjects in the sample were poor, with low acculturation levels. 40% had undiagnosed cognitive symptoms for 3 or more years. Of those demented, 38.5% had Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 38.5% met criteria for vascular dementia (VasD). The best predictors of VasD were hypertension and cerebrovascular disease, whereas apolipoprotein E4 allele best predicted AD. Other forms of dementia were also present. 20% of the sample were clinically depressed but not demented. Compared with data for predominantly white populations, the proportion of AD cases was lower, and that of VasD was considerably higher than expected. The findings could have implications for differential cultural and genetic risk factors for dementia among diverse ethnic and racial groups. Further studies are needed to obtain accurate prevalence estimates for dementia and depression in older US Hispanic groups. (RH). |
