Annotation | Although depression is the commonest mental illness in older people living in the community, only 10% of depressed older people are referred to old age psychiatry services. 28 people identified with depression in a day hospital had been referred by their general practitioner (GP). These were compared with 52 people with depression in the community (from an ongoing Dublin mental health study) who had not been referred to the psychiatric services. It appears that severity of depression and having higher levels of anxiety will make GP referral to old age psychiatric services more likely. (RH). |
