Annotation | This study presents data relating to older people collected during 1999, the first year of the Scottish Household Survey (SHS), and aims to inform specific areas of social policy in Scotland, in particular social justice and rural development. Demographic information takes account of the numbers in long-term care, and includes SHS results relating to marital status, household composition, geographic distribution, and minority ethnic groups. The theme of standards of living concentrates on reported income, housing, neighbourhood, and experience of and attitudes to personal safety. A chapter on health and social care covers mobility, aids and adaptations, frequency of GP visits, and receipt of related services. Other subjects include access to transport, and activities such as work, volunteering, care-giving, leisure, and voting. The rural dimension is considered in each chapter. A concluding chapter provides a commentary on gaps and limitations of the data that emerge from the analysis, and makes recommendations for further analysis and future development of the SHS. (RH). |
