Annotation | A multidisciplinary and critical guide to our knowledge of dementia examines three broad questions. First, what is the nature of dementia,. and how can we better understand it? Section 1 reviews the following theoretical frameworks: biomedical, clinical, psychological, sociological, philosophical and spiritual perspectives; and the perspectives of people with dementia, their families and carers. Section 2 asks what do we know about what constitutes good practice in dementia care? Areas covered include: assessment and care management, communication, therapeutic activity, and working with carers. Finally, how does the policy, organisational and research context of dementia care affect service development? Section 3 provides an overview of policy development; outlines key concepts regarding how professions and organisations operate; and examines approaches to service development, and the importance of involving people with dementia and their carers. The value of research in dementia care for implementing services and developing policy is discussed. (RH) |
