AnnotationOne third of the UK population is aged over 60, two million of whom are carers. This review commissioned by Help the Aged brings together existing evidence and supplements it with fresh analysis of the General Household Survey (GHS) 1995 to draw out the particular needs of carers aged over 60. The review considers specific groups of carers, including spousal care, and older carers of parents, adult children, and those with mental health problems. The consequences and impact of caring are described; formal and informal sources of support for older carers explored; and the issues relating to those caring for people with dementia discussed. The review summarises evidence relating to the needs and circumstances of older carers from ethnic minority groups, rural older carers and former carers. Implications of the review for research, policy and services are discussed. (RH).
