Annotation | Communication is at the heart of approaches to dementia care. The authors offer an in-depth exploration of ways of establishing and developing communication with people with dementia. The text quotes the words of two people with dementia, Alice and Jane, to set the person with dementia centre-stage. The book is arranged in five parts. Part 1 discusses the basics: conversations, personhood, non-verbal communication, language, memory, and interpretation. Part 2 looks at the practical aspects of interaction: making contact, developing the interaction, endings, and writing. Part 3 deals with larger themes which seem to have special significance: narratives, relationships, and awareness. Part 4 examines care practice and ethical implications. Part 5, on integration, quotes a conversation with Jane to analyse the various aspects of communication discussed. (RH). |
