Annotation | In examining sources of race differences in cognitive functioning in older people, this study attempted to incorporate the clinical literature (emphasising biological correlates of cognitive functioning) and the social research literature (emphasising social inequalities and consequent health outcomes). Use of data from the Assets of Health Dynamics of the Oldest Old survey (AHEAD) demonstrates that race has a direct association with cognitive functioning, and indirect effects of race through the social risk factors of education and health insurance. There did not appear to be indirect effects of race through biological risk factors. (RH). |
