Education and the risk of Alzheimer's disease findings from the study of dementia in Swedish twins | Author(s) | Margaret Gatz, Pia Svedberg, Nancy L Pedersen |
Journal title | Journals of Gerontology: Series B, Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences, vol 56B, no 5, September 2001 |
Pages | pp P292-P300 |
Keywords | Dementia ; At risk ; Educational status [elderly] ; Twins ; Sweden. |
Annotation | There are four views about a reason why education might be related to dementia: cognitive reserve; "use it or lose it"; education as a proxy for other exposures; and diagnostic bias. A matched pairs analysis of subjects from the Swedish Study of Twins showed low education to be a significant risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD), but not necessarily for all dementias. (RH). |
