Annotation | Community development is about involving people in issues which affect their lives. It is a process based on the development of an equal partnership between all those involved to enable a sharing of skills, knowledge and experience. This report argues that community development has a major role to play in the effective delivery of local authority services, and in ensuring the co-ordination and responsiveness of services to local areas. Case studies show a range of approaches used by different authorities: community development strategy (Dudley, St Helens, Wolverhampton and Hackney); public involvement or participation (Manchester and Haringey); advice and community education (Sunderland and Sandwell); training support (Haringey); and social services (Manchester).
