AnnotationThe Government's "Caring for carers" strategy aims to support carers in their caring activities, sustain their other roles (including paid employment), and improve their long-term financial security. This is a summary of a project funded by the Department of Health (DH) as part of its Outcomes of Social Care for Adults initiative. The research was based on national representative samples of carers and non-carers from the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS, 1991 to 1995), the General Household Survey (GHS, 1985, 1990 and 1995), and the Family and Working Lives Survey (1985). Findings are outlined on the population of carers, trends in informal care, health outcomes of caring, the effects of informal care on employment and income, pensions arrangements and informal care, and the implications for local services and national government.
