Evidence-based care for carers
 — what do we mean?

KeywordsDementia ; Family care ; Psychology [care] ; Management [care] ; Needs [elderly].
AnnotationThe term 'evidence base' usually refers to the published research found in printed and electronic journals and reports. However, evidence-based care should be more than a database of research studies into different interventions. The author proposes another definition appropriate to carers' needs: "Evidence-based care for carers is the judicious and timely use of relevant information, from a body of knowledge about dementia, resources and care, to answer those questions pertinent to a particular carer at a particular time". The discipline of psychology is suggested for enhancing 'evidence-based' care: it offers theoretical frameworks and other methodologies that can be tailored for use by carers. (RH).
