Annotation | Age Concern England (ACE) has felt for some time that a better balance is needed between the interests of pedestrians and those of road users. As well as reducing pollution and traffic, it should also be remembered that walking is very important in promoting older people's health and sense of well-being. Access on foot to local amenities is vital for enabling everyone to participate in their communities. Age Concern's submission to the House of Commons Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Committee's inquiry " Walking in towns and cities" recommends the following to promote walking for older people: improved conditions of pavements; improved road safety; restricting parking; and improving the walking environment.
