Annotation599 participants of a successful ageing study, the Leiden 85-Plus Study in the Netherlands, were interviewed at their place of residence, and screened for cognition (Mini-Mental State Examination - MMSE), and competence in activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental ADLs using the Groningen Activity Restriction Scale (GARS). 77% were competent to perform all ADLs and performed them regularly. However, important structural discrepancies were found between measures of competence and actual performance, which have important consequences when comparing estimates of disability in the oldest old.
