AnnotationAll 209 people with dementia in four residential and two nursing homes in Newcastle upon Tyne received a standardised assessment: Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI), Barthel Scale, and psychotropic drugs prescribed. 112 of the residents were assessed using Dementia Care Mapping (DCM), an observational method for quality of life (QOL) indices. Lower performance on activities of daily living (ADLs) - reduced well-being (WB), social withdrawal (SW), engagement in activities (EA), and taking psychotropics - were associated with reduced QOL, but symptoms from the NPI were not. More focused prescribing of psychotropics and better staff training are essential. (RH).
