Annotation | The unitary council was formed in 1996 from most of the former Gwynedd (former Meirionnydd, Dwyfor and Arfon Districts, and excluding Anglesey and Conwy). The aim of the joint review is to assess the extent to which the people of Gwynedd are well served by their social services. A high level of satisfaction (85%) was reported by respondents to the service user questionnaire. 21% of the population are of pensionable age, an older profile than the England and Wales average. The review notes one of the highest levels of expenditure on services for older people, the highest level of residential care for older people in Wales, and a below-average number of people being helped to live at home. Examples of good practice include: rural daycare centres run in conjunction with Age Concern; the Gwynedd Rural Ageing Network bringing together statutory and voluntary agencies, with the Centre for Social Policy Research and Development (CSPRD) at Bangor; and consulting service users and carers on developing services. A priority suggested by the review is for a commissioning strategy including stronger links to health and other agencies. The report's text is in English and Welsh. (RH). |
